Mechanisms of Decadal North Atlantic Climate Variability and Implications for the Recent Cold Anomaly

چکیده

Abstract Decadal sea surface temperature (SST) fluctuations in the North Atlantic Ocean influence climate over adjacent land areas and are a major source of skill predictions. However, mechanisms underlying decadal SST variability remain to be fully understood. This study isolates driving on time scales using low-frequency component analysis, which identifies spatial temporal structure variability. Based observations, large ensemble historical simulations, preindustrial control we identify mode atmosphere–ocean with dominant scale 13–18 years. Large-scale atmospheric circulation anomalies drive both through contemporaneous air–sea heat fluxes delayed ocean changes, latter involving meridional overturning horizontal gyre circulation. Recent Progress in Understanding and Predicting Atlantic Decadal Climate Variability

Purpose of Review Recent Atlantic climate prediction studies are an exciting new contribution to an extensive body of research on Atlantic decadal variability and predictability that has long emphasized the unique role of the Atlantic Ocean in modulating the surface climate. We present a survey of the foundations and frontiers in our understanding of Atlantic variability mechanisms, the role of...

Solar forcing synchronizes decadal North Atlantic climate variability

Quasi-decadal variability in solar irradiance has been suggested to exert a substantial effect on Earth's regional climate. In the North Atlantic sector, the 11-year solar signal has been proposed to project onto a pattern resembling the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), with a lag of a few years due to ocean-atmosphere interactions. The solar/NAO relationship is, however, highly misrepresented...

North Atlantic Climate Variability: Phenomena, Impacts and Mechanisms

Variability of the North Atlantic Oscillation and the Tropical Atlantic dominate the climate of the North Atlantic sector, the underlying ocean and surrounding continents on interannual to decadal time scales. Here we review these phenomena, their climatic impacts and our present state of understanding of their underlying cause. Copyright © 2001 Royal Meteorological Society.

North Pacific Decadal Climate Variability since 1661

Climate in the North Pacific and North American sectors has experienced interdecadal shifts during the twentieth century. A network of recently developed tree-ring chronologies for Southern and Baja California extends the instrumental record and reveals decadal-scale variability back to 1661. The Pacific decadal oscillation (PDO) is closely matched by the dominant mode of tree-ring variability ...

Evidence for multiple drivers of North Atlantic multi-decadal climate variability

[1] Observed North Atlantic Ocean surface temperatures have changed in a non-monotonic and non-uniform fashion over the last century. Here we assess the relative roles of greenhouses gases, anthropogenic aerosols, natural forcings and internal variability to the North Atlantic surface temperature decadal fluctuations using multi-model climate simulations driven by estimates of observed external...
